Write different presidential administrations from the era we studied (Washington – Lincoln) and, after noting some of their various successes and/or failures, conclude with whether you believe that presidency to be considered, generally, a success or a failure. (Basically a paragraph for each president)
List of presidents: George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Taylor, James K Polk, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln.
Ex. WOODROW WILSON – As one of the Progressive Presidents Era presidents, Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States, established the Federal Reserve which is the central bank of the United States and responsible for promoting the safety and soundness of individual financial institutions and consumer protections. He supported the continuation of antitrust laws and legislation and instituted Federal Income Tax. Wilson guided the country in and out of the first World War. His most major influence in the negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles led to the establishment of the League of Nations, the predecessor to the United Nations, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919. He promoted the passage of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote. Despite his progressive achievements, Wilson was blatantly racist, as evidenced by his vocally defending the Ku Klux Klan, RE-segregating the federal government, and firing 15 of 17 black supervisors and replacing them with white men. There are other examples that demonstrate his racist character, and not simply through a contemporary lens today, but even for the times, he lived in. So while often viewed as competent and arguably, considering some of his accomplishments, and even great president, his reputation is absolutely tarnished when acknowledging his obvious racist inclinations. Ultimately it could be suggested that Wilson was, pragmatically and politically, a hit, yet in terms of character and moral fortitude, a flop.
