Your task is to choose 2 of the 6 categories in the survey and write an essay to the international
community. Based on reasonable criteria of your choice, you should make a conclusion for each
of the two categories that you choose by labeling it the best, average, or the worst, relative to
how you think the US stacks up to other developed countries.
You are free to organize things as you see fit, but please keep the following points in mind. As to
your categories, please look into what a few other countries are like on a basic level; its alright
to rely on your own subjective feelings of how the US might stack up, but introduce some basic
comparative data that you find doing your own research. Whatever you write, you need to justify
your conclusions with a combination of data and opinion. If you assert that the US is the best or
worst in an area, make sure you discuss where or what might be the opposite case. That is, if
you conclude that the US is the worst at entertainment, you should do some research on
which countries might fall into being the best (based on your own criteria) as far as
entertainment goes. In any case, make sure to explain and justify your views of the category in
the American context. Finally, point out what the US can learn from the world in that particular
category and/or what the US can show the rest of the world.
Also, please think beyond just comparing rankings to rankings or amounts with amounts. Try to
think broadly and in more abstract terms. For example, the US military is far more powerful than
most militaries, of course. That doesnt mean that someone from abroad might conclude ten
times out of ten that its the best, right? Why would someone not automatically conclude that
the US military is the best given the massive firepower and other material advantages it
possesses? The reasons you come up with to that question should help propel your
conclusions. For example, think about US alliances and the prevalence of US troops abroad in
both combat and non-combat roles. Rely on history only insofar as you think it impacts things in
the present day.
What you should NOT do is write a paper based entirely on opinion with zero citations to
substantive sources. If you write about health care, for example, at least see how other
developed countries stack up so you can give your conclusions some credibility. Look up facts
to support your presumptions; you just might find that your beliefs change with a little digging.
Finally, dont forget that your audience is the international community, especially people in
countries with a broadly similar level of development to the United States. That implies that you
might have to explain certain concepts or details, which you might not have to do if you were
assigned to write to a domestic audience.
