Write an investigation report as a plan to advise a Senior Investigating Officer on a series of arson Crimes. The report should be written with a forensic and investigative focus. Task: You are a junior Police Detective working alongside a Crime Scene Investigator, tasked to provide an investigation plan with forensic opportunities for the Senior Investigating Officer of a series of crimes. Scenario: Bishops Waltham is an affluent historical town in the close to Winchester. The road network is good. There are a number of historical sites and popular leisure outlets. The town center is covered by CCTV. The Police Station is in a quiet road but close to the center. It is a Neighborhood station consisting of a Sergeant, 5 Police Constables and 7 PCSO’s. The local authority have funded a Community Safety Officer. They are all well known locally. Crime is low. There are reports of Anti Social Behavior and low level drug taking. This is mainly in the center of he town close to the Barclays Bank. The have been reports of bin fires. This started as once a month but has now increased to every week. The local team believe it is just the local kids. However, in the early hours (0200 – 0300) Thursday morning, there was a fire in an integral (attached to a house) garage. The fire brigade was called and the Chief Officer reported that it was lucky it did not reach the house. On Saturday morning (0300) the fire crew were called to a house fire. The occupants managed to leave without any injury, but there was significant damage to the downstairs of the house. Both you and the Crime Scene Investigator have been called to work with the Fire Investigation team. This assessment must be fully referenced and formatted in APA 7th format. Assessment Guidelines: This assessment is designed to enable students to demonstrate their knowledge of how the Police and Forensic Officers work together to plan an investigation. Students will be able to draw on the feedback from this essay in the other assessment. Students must demonstrate that they understand the issues and are able to inform them with their knowledge from core academic literature, via a coherent logical narrative throughout the essay. A thread will be created on the discussion forum for the module coordinator to answer questions about the assessment. Additional Guidance: The report will feel unusual in terms of your academic style. The report will be technical and operationally focused; therefore, it will be light on academic literature. It is a balance to show some academic literature but the emphasis is on originality of thought and creativity. A report is often a document designed for executives (busy senior people) to make decisions on critical issues. Whilst they may only consider the key points, it has to contain a level of detail that provides the evidence. The structure of a report, is standard. The key is to keep to the structure. This report reflects on the operational element of your learning. Imagine you are a junior Police Detective working alongside a Crime Scene Investigator, tasked to provide an investigation plan with forensic opportunities for the Senior Investigating Officer of a series of crimes. Your Report will seek address, but not exclusively: Context and back ground to the scenario Legislation of the offences An investigation plan to assist the Senior Investigating Officer Options for consideration: Scope your forensic and investigation options, for example: seat of the fire, fingerprints, CCTV, house to house enquiries. Select the best options and provide the rationale, evidence, benefits and challenges Consider the broader impact of the investigation Media considerations and management Community considerations Recommendations: Include a clear implementation plan (costs/logistics/culture) This can be broader, it’s your work and creativity. I suggest using the following structure 1.Title Page (Not included in word count) You can format a nice title page, providing the reader with the topic of your report. 2. Executive Summary Your executive summary should summarise the key points you have made in the report, reinstate the purpose/aim of your report. Highlight your major points in brief and describe any recommendations made from your report. This section is usually written last, the key difference between an abstract and a conclusion, is that the abstract provides an overview of all stages of the report and not just the end results. The main aim of your summary is to give enough information to enable a prospective reader to judge whether they need to read the full report. You can find examples of abstracts here 3. Contents Page (Not included in word count) This page should clearly list all the sections and subsections of your report, and the page numbers where each of those sections begin. 4. Introduction The introduction section will be shorter than your usual introductions and will simply describe the purpose (aim) of the report and highlight why it is necessary and useful to explore this, you may want to explain the background/backdrop of the report and why it is necessary, and/or why the Recommendations are necessary. You may also want to define key terms (words) that you will be using throughout the report, so that the reader is clear when they are used. 5. You can create your own chapters here, for example you may wish to format this as below: Context Legislation Options for considerations: Please focus on this section: Investigation Plan with recommended options for the SIO Impact of the Investigation Media Considerations Community Considerations Recommendations Remember who the report is designed for..
