Write an essay that is an informative description or definition. You will focus on giving information in a factual, objective manner and describing your subject clearly and thoroughly. This is your research paper. As such you will use three secondary (outside) sources and you will document your sources in MLA format on a Works Cited sheet. Be sure to put your sources in alphabetical order according to the last names. Indent the second and all subsequent lines.
1. Choose a subject with which you are familiar.
2. Describe your subject to an audience that has never seen it or has no knowledge of it.
DO NOT USE FIRST OR SECOND PERSON PRONOUNS. DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL OPINIONS. DO NOT WRITE A PROCESS OR HOW-TO PAPER.
3. Divide your subject into parts and describe each part.
4. Find information on the internet, in newspapers or magazines or at the library.
5. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE YOUR SOURCES.
6. Introduce the quote with your own thought. Insert the quote. Explain the quote. This is called the 1, 2, 3 step process. Be sure to use a complete sentence for each step.
A possible format:
Paragraph 1: Offer a brief description of the subject and underline your thesis.
Paragraph 2, 3 and 4: Discuss the three things you underlined in your thesis. Describe several major aspects of your subject.
Paragraph 5: Write a conclusion that sums up key aspects of your subject.
