Write an essay analyzing the 1963 CBS reports interview with Rachel Carson. Basically, youll be analyzing this video as a primary document that tells us something about Carson and the publication of her landmark book, Silent Spring in the early 1960s. The premise is the same imagine yourself in 1963 and seeing/hearing this for the first time. This particular interview is often cited as the moment when Carson won over the American public and perhaps even President Kennedy. Your essay should use this document to explain why and how this interview proved so important to the reception of Carson and her work. Just as last time, you should pay attention to the visual elements, the words, language, the position/performance of various subjects (Carson, her critics, the narration), and the production. Because this was essentially a film produced by CBS, you should also consider how the presentation of the subject (the images, narration, and organization of subjects ) would have influenced a viewer.
