Write an argumentative essay that attempts to persuade your readers either that the Internet is weakening our cognitive abilities or that it is not. Do not try to find some in-between or compromise in this argument. Take a clear side and stay focused on this narrow topic (don’t bring up unrelated ideas about other effects or dangers of the Internet!). As a formal writing assignment, you should not be using first person (“I” or “me” or “we”) except in the case of offering an anecdote that is useful in introducing your topic or developing a point. However, every body paragraph’s point must be developed with cited source support, not just anecdotes or general opinion statements. You must introduce source material from at least two sources that we read as a class this week as relevant support sometime during the course of your essay. You may use “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and “Does the Internet Make Make You Dumber?” by Nicholas Carr, and “Does the Internet Make You Smarter?” by Clay Shirky. (Some sources mentioned in the video were only assigned in the accelerated version of this class. Don’t worry about them if I didn’t assign them to this class. Also, disregard the dates in the video. Correct dates are listed in the Canvas assignments.) Any other sources that you find on your own and want to include must be approved by me (which means asking me about them with plenty of time before your draft or paper is due, so that I can have my typical 24-36 hours to respond). Finally, your essay must be at least 1,200 words long, not counting your required MLA-formatted Works Cited page, and it must be structured into an introduction, focused body paragraphs and a conclusion

I want to say it strengthens our cognitive ability.
