A) Provide an argumentative thesis that makes a clear claim specifically about your chosen
text(s) in response to your chosen prompt.
B) Construct organizing claims within the paper that establish salient links between form and
content; between *specific* literary elements/ devices present in your texts and the politics/
content of those texts. A paper that engages only with content will not be successful.
C) Use direct evidence from your text in the form of quotations and instances of paraphrasing,
properly cited in MLA format.
prompt Both James Joyce and Joseph Conrad are known for their experimentation with literary
strategies for representing inner human psychology: what is called interiority in literary
texts. Write a thesis-driven, argumentative paper in which you draw on how Joyces The
Dead and Conrads The Heart of Darkness uses (both different and similar) strategies to
produce the effect of interiority in their characters. Note: whereas it is up to you as to
which literary elements you choose to talk about, it is difficult to engage with The
Dead without attending to its major application of free indirect discourse.
Needs in-text citations in MLA format for all quotes or instances of paraphrasing. Note
that in-text citations must be correctly formatted and must use the author name and not
the name of the textbooks editor.Must be double-spaced, in size 12 Times New Roman Font, with standard margins.
– Must conform to the standards of academic writing and organization (i.e. it requires an
introduction & conclusion, must use appropriate and professional language, etc.)
As stated above, the evidence for your claims is to be gathered and presented via the method
known as close reading, which requires you to zoom in on particular passages that contain

examples of the literary devices you choose to examine (dont forget the form + content
formula). A close reading paper is not a research paperyouwill therefore limit yourselves to
drawing evidence only from your chosen primary text(s).
citation must come from the story itself. i have the citation for the textbook which contains the story
