Write a study addressing the topic of universal basic income’s role in health policy. The United States spends roughly twice as much per capita on healthcare spending when compared to similar industrialized nations. Despite this high rate of expenditure, the United States has less access to care and performs worse in many notable metrics including infant mortality, diabetes prevention, and mean life expectancy. A healthcare system that costs twice as much while providing low-quality care, poor health outcomes, and less access to treatment underscores the need to rethink our system. It’s notable that the United States spends less on social welfare per capita when compared with those same peer nations while boasting higher rates of inequity, poverty, and homelessness. The purpose of this paper is to examine the progressive welfare policy of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a novel way to reduce health inequity, address key deficits in determinants of health, and improve health outcomes by reducing financial stress. This review compiles several studies conducted over the last decade to examine the potential impact of UBI on improving social determinants of health.
