Write a research paper where you examine several published views on some narrow aspect of Beloved by Toni Morrison that interests you. you could research a theme like slavery, gender issues, infanticide, poverty, bravery, or women’s treatment by slave owners etc. etc. etc. Obviously, you need to read the whole novel carefully. This is a paper about Beloved. It is not simply about an issue. You will want to work out the basis of comparison, or your treatment of a theme in the book, but some possible questions are:
How do the characters contribute to our understanding of the ethical /social values of society? What purpose do they serve in the work? What ideas do they represent?
What compelling theme in the book speaks to broader issues in society today, or historically? How does slavery and motherhood shed meaning on the theme?
You must also find at least two scholarly journal articles that reflect or disagree with the ideas that you are highlighting in your paper. These could be from a bound journal article, a monograph, or an article from a critical anthology. You should paraphrase and quote from this research.
Based on the direction above, I would like to write about the following theme:
“Beloved” by Toni Morrison is a powerful book that gives us a picture of what slavery was like in the 19th century. Using her words we visually can see and feel what their lives were like. While gruesome at times, we see what they had to endure to simply survive- and was it even worth it to survive? In the book, there is a correlation from the characters past and traumas and how they see and feel love, this is a theme I would like to explore in my essay. I would like to focus on the main characters of the book: Sethe, Denver, Beloved, and Paul D. Each of these characters had a similar past because of being slaves, but each character had different past traumas and ultimately affected what love means to them.
