Write a paper Using the appropriate theoretical tool to identity and analyze the construction of
crime and/or policing in recent news media coverage.
The assignment is a critical engagement of the construction, representation, and/or framing of that story in the context of the news article. The paper must be a critical analysis. In short, students are to provide a summary of the news article, the application of the relevant theory and the overall discussion of the news story.
Objective: Using the appropriate theoretical tool to identity and analyze the construction of
crime and/or policing in recent news media coverage.
For this paper, your meditated source is a NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.
Students are to select a news article on a criminal justice and/or police work story. Your analysis is grounded in a theory (i.e. Marxism, labelling, strain, postmodernism, cultural criminology) to support your argument.
Tips: While not exhaustive, a few matters to consider in your analysis: how the story is constructed, what does it represent, and why? What message is it sending about the crime, justice system, players (ie. lawyers, judges) and/or law enforcement. Reminder, this course title is “representing crime”.
