Write a literary analysis of Robert Louis Stevensons Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Topics (choose ONE):
1. Why does Dr. Jekyll create a potion in order to strategically live a double life? He continues to take the drug and creates a different residence in order to engage in activities he couldnt otherwise. What does this tell us about Victorian society and the double life? Where does hypocrisy fit in? In the “Full Statement of the Case,” Dr. Jekyll says he is not a hypocrite. Do you believe him? Why or why not?

Thesis Template:
The thesis is the main idea of the essay and incorporates an original argument: Main idea + reasoning. It usually includes a because clause. It also answers “how so?” and “why?” In the case of this essay, it should answer the first question of the prompt in full.

Tips:
1. Start your essay strong and in a way that makes sense for your reader.
2. Avoid plot summary. Your reader has read the novel.
3. Include developed topic sentences that provide a specific argument that supports the thesis and captures the goal of the paragraph. Tip: If your last sentence of each paragraph does the job, then move it to the place of topic sentence, which should be at the beginning of the paragraph.
4. Explain your quotes and set them into context with when and where they occur in the novel. Include sufficient analysis after each quote. Quotes should comprise less than 25% of your body paragraphs.
5. Refrain from I statements and use concise language to deliver your argument. Believe in what you are asserting.

1. Introduction: Include the author and title along with a brief summary to provide the reader with the context, and a thesis that will guide you as a writer regarding what your essay will discuss that is interesting, specific, arguable, and manageable. You may also want to set the novel in its historical and cultural context. See the lecture notes for this information.
2. The topic sentences in each paragraph should address the topic and the thesis.
3. Transition smoothly between ideas: Transitional words or phrases can express various relationships between ideas, including In addition, Moreover, and Furthermore to indicate that you are adding to the previous idea, and On the other hand and However to show that the two ideas are contrasting.
4. Remember to use a block quote if your quotation is four or more lines. Set the quote apart from the text with two indents, remove quotation marks. No more than one block quote is recommended for an essay of 1,000 words.
5. Bring at least one point from the introduction into the conclusion and wrap things up with a final provocative thought

Citing from a print source:
Dr. Jekyll claims how he is the first that could thus plod in the public eye with a load of genial respectability, and in a moment…strip off these lendings and spring headlong into the sea of liberty (Stevenson 52).

Citing from an ebook or a kindle:
Tips: As you read, cut and paste any quotes of significance into a document and note the chapter. This will help you when you start to write your essay. You will cite the name of the chapter at the end of the quote. Use Control F to locate certain words or phrases within Project Gutenberg.
The novel is unique in that it has chapter headings instead of numbers so you will put the title of the chapter in quotation marks. Here is an example: The author describes Utterson very strategically in the opening paragraph of the novel: “But he had an approved tolerance for others; sometimes wondering, almost with envy, at the high pressure of spirits involved in their misdeeds; and in any extremity inclined to help rather than to reprove” (Stevenson “Story of the Door”).
