Exam 2 is a discussion test designed to demonstrate your writing skills, your level of reading and preparation, and your ability to analyze texts, ideas, and concepts in a critical and intelligent fashion.
1. Write a detailed one-paragraph explication (careful analysis) of that poem. You may point out imagery, allusion, literary device, historical reference, etc. to develop your discussion. The poem is on Robert Frost “Out, out.
2. Consider Susan Glaspells short play Trifles. (A) Identify the gender assumptions of the male characters in the play and describe their “maleness.” (B) Do you see any symbols in the play that are significant? For example, many people point to the bird as symbolic of something important.
3. This is just to say by William Carlos Williams and write a detailed one-paragraph analysis of the poem. As we suggested above, you may point out imagery, allusion, literary device, historical reference, etc. to develop your discussion.
4. Write a one-paragraph character analysis of J. Alfred Prufrock in the T. S. Eliot poem we studied in this unit. What traits, habits, and characteristics do you see in him? Be sure to tie your discussion to evidence in the text.
