Persuasive Research Essay Assignment
Assignment: Write a clear, thoughtful, and well-developed argument(1250-1500 words), in which you synthesize and evaluate how your sources (at least 6 of the 8 sources from your annotated bibliography) respond to the issue/research question you selected. Then present your own position and argument on the issue, with supporting evidence.
Your sources should represent the different positions on the aspect of the issue you chose to research – as in the Next Step bibliography: antitrust investigations, data and privacy, extremism, foreigners crack down, or some other focus – and include arguments which support your thesis and also counter arguments which oppose it. You want to give a balanced view of the issue, but still make a strong argument to support your position.
In the first half of your essay, synthesize the different positions presented by your sources by summarizing what they say, showing points of agreement and disagreement with each other, and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of their supporting arguments. Your position on the issue (your argument) should be an informed response to the arguments in your sources, clearly supported by good evidence that you have found through your research.
Sources: Cite at least 6 of the sources from your annotated bibliography (you do not have to use every source). Cite the CQR report and additional articles cited in the CQR report, and/or other articles cited by those articles, or found in the EBSCO or JSTOR online databases. Cite at least one academic journal, or one listed in the “Reports & Studies” section of the CQR bibliography. These should all be included in the Annotated Bibliography you have already turned in. If there are any sources in your AB that I mark as not allowed because they are not reliable, DO NOT USE THEM IN YOUR ESSAY. Choose an approved source from your bibliography instead. Use any new sources not in the AB with extreme caution, and in a very limited way, such as including a picture, cartoon, video, etc. as a current example (see my use of a comic in my example research essay). All sources used in your essay must be included in the Works Cited.
The annotated bibliography document I attached lists the only sources that should be used. Some of them are from EBSCO (which you cannot access) so I attached the articles as well.
