Summary #3 Assignment Due: Tuesday 11/28 Summarizing is an important skill. Being able to identify an author’s argument and relevant information presented to support this argument allows us to become better close-readers. When we summarize, we must prioritize the most important information and explain how the author makes their points. We are not analyzing or providing our own opinion in a summary. Choose one article from list below. Write a brief summary of 250-500 words in which you explain the author’s thesis and how they craft their argument: what is the most importance evidence they include? Do they have sub-arguments? Counter-arguments? You must decide which information is most crucial in summarizing the article. Leave out information that you don’t think is central to the author’s claim. Options: • “In Defense of Cultural Appropriation” by Kenan Malik • “Cultural Appropriation Is, In Fact, Indefensible” by K. Tempest Bradford • “Men Explain Things to Me” by Rebecca Solnit • “Self-Empowerment is Just Another Word for Narcissism How Contemporary Feminism Has Lost its Way” by Jessica Crispin Requirements: Each summary should be 250-500 words, double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins (MLA Style).
