Write a 750-1000-word essay (approximate length) that places TWO separate works we have studied into conversation around ONE of the themes listed above. If it helps you to begin with two quotes, as we have done this semester, that is one way in. For example, you might choose one quote from Emerson and another from Whitman and discuss how these quotes are in conversation about what American literature should look like or who the American writer is. You may select any two texts that we have studied this semester. Which texts will enable you to show what you know the most?
When using quotes, transcribe them exactly as they appear in the text, only adjusting them using brackets or ellipses as described in the Student Success module (Integrating Quotations)
Explain where these texts overlap and why you have chosen to put them together. Refer specifically to words and images in the quotations and in the prompt.
Discuss how the writers agree and/or disagree, or how one extends or complicates the other based on the focal theme you have selected.
Draw from other parts of the works to demonstrate broader knowledge of the works than these two important quotations.
Is there something about these statements or ideas or the language or style of written expression that you will take with you or would like to remember after this course, and, if so, why?
