Write a 500-600 word, 5 paragraph essay that uses examples from the story to support your ideas based on the information you discovered during the reading of Poes work.
OPTION I
Is Montresor in The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe insane? (Dont fall into the trap of assuming he has to be crazy in order to kill someone.) Remember also that this person who narrates the story is NOT Edgar Allan Poe himself.
Who is this character/narrator? Age? What do you know about him? His family?
What does he do? Say? Why?
What new insight does this person have by the end of the story?
What type of imagery is used to reveal this information?
Is he reliable?
Once you are ready to argue your opinion about Montresor as a person, then support your comments about him with examples from Poes story. DO NOT solely base your assumptions on the fact that he has killed Fortunato maybe.
OPTION 2
Did Fortunato die at the hands of Montresor, or was he more ill than either he or Montresor realized?
Would his poor health have caused his death that night, no matter the location?
Did he actually die because of the catacombs damp, moldy condition?
What proof exists to support your opinion?
What events/examples prove your point? What descriptions? What comments from either/both men?
What significance do you find in the ending for support?
What type of imagery is used to reveal this information?
The above questions are meant purely to guide your thinking as you decide and go through the process of discovering the points you want to discuss in your essay. With the exception of the original Option questions, none of them is meant to be answered in or direct the format of your essay.
Before you begin writing this essay, review the chapter of your book that covers Writing About Literature and remember that you are trying to discover first the main idea Poe was trying to get across. Every decision Poe made when he created the story was based on that main idea he wanted to convey. How does your viewpoint fit with the main idea Poe was trying to help his readers understand?
Keep in mind that your essay should have least five (5) paragraphs; a well-developed introduction with a strong thesis statement; properly structured paragraphs in the body that expand on the points supporting your point of view; and an ending that uses your points to draw a conclusion about the main topic.
Remember that you may use your dictionary, thesaurus and would be well advised to use the Handbook portion of your textbook to check your grammar. If you use anything from a source other than your head or Poes story, it must be properly cited in the essay and on a Works Cited page according to MLA requirements as explained in the Purdue OWL website.
