This verse highlights the importance of working together and the support and strength that can come from others in challenging times. In project management, the project team works together towards a common goal, supporting and collaborating to achieve a common purpose. Depending on the healthcare setting, a project team may have a different composition. A Clinical Project in a Physician’s Office Stakeholders McLaughlin et al. (2022) describe stakeholders as “anyone who has a vested interest in the outcome of a project, including but not limited to employees, customers, users, partner organizations, project sponsors, and the project manager “(p. 113). In the case of a project conducted in a physician’s office, stakeholders may include patients, caregivers, physicians and clinical staff, administrative staff, project managers, and potentially IT staff and insurance companies. For example, research by Wilson et al. (2020) discussed developing an electronic point-of-care dashboard for patients, clinicians, and caregivers to be used during office visits in a pain management office. Stakeholders for the project included patients living with serious illnesses, caregivers, physicians, social workers, nurses, clinical informaticists, and technology engineers. This project improved the quality and efficiency of care by capturing, sharing, and displaying data collected during office visits. Team Members The project manager is critical to the success of any project and must be capable of running effective meetings and facilitating open dialogue (McLaughlin et al., 2022). As stated by Shahzad et al. (2023), project management includes guiding the completion of tasks within the defined time, budget, and quality while achieving stakeholder satisfaction. In a physician’s office, the practice manager or lead physician may take on the role of project manager. Other team members may include physicians, nurses, administrative staff, IT staff, and quality improvement specialists. Project Sponsor McLaughlin et al. (2022) state that a project should always have a sponsor with enough executive-level influence to clear roadblocks as the project progresses. Additionally, a project sponsor is a representative of the organization responsible for its success and is often in charge of appointing the project manager. A project sponsor acts as a project chairperson by managing problems outside the control of the project manager (Louw et al., 2022). The project sponsor in a physician’s office would most likely be the practice’s owner. A Clinical Project in a Hospital Project Team The project team would include the project manager, physicians and specialists, nursing staff, quality improvement specialists, IT specialists, and non-clinical administrative staff in a hospital setting. For example, a hospital in California developed an interoperative emergency response system for cardiac arrest occurring in the OR. The project team included physicians, nurses, pharmacists, quality managers, hospital code response team leaders, surgical scrub technicians, anesthesiologists, and surgeons. Key Stakeholders In a hospital, stakeholders may include patients and families, physicians and clinical staff, hospital administration, IT departments, administrative departments, board members, and possibly regulatory agencies, such as CMS, depending on the project. Project sponsors In a hospital, the project sponsors may include the chief medical officer, chief operating officer, or other healthcare executives and board members responsible for the project’s overall success.
