Assignment #2: Outline (15%) This assignment will be a lead-up to the final Research Essay and be an opportunity for students to write a component of that essay. Students will receive a grade and feedback on this assignment before they write the Research Essay (this is, in part, why the Research Essay is designed as a Take-Home Exam).
Assignment:
Essay Outline. You will be asked to write a 1page outline in point form following the guidelines provided in lectures. You may include short quotes from sources, but make sure you voice is also present. The outline should give a road map of how you will get through your argument and not be simply a list of random points.
Outlines and templates:
Here is a rudimentary template for academic writing:
An Introduction that includes:
A general opening statement and
Sections of S are a, b and c.
And a Thesis
Then Section: a
Followed by Section: b
And then Section: c (or more)
Followed by a proper Conclusion which reinforces and sums up
Your sections headings will be defined in the outlines you provide throughout the course
If you follow this simple template and work on clarifying section headings, your writing will greatly improve and the production of your essays become a much easier process.
