At the time when the book was published, the late MA, Senator Edwards Kennedy remarked in the New York Times on the timeliness and importance of Moody’s work: “Though the author of this autobiography is only twenty-eight years old, her life has already spanned the revolution that has … made racial equality the central issue of our time.” To what extent was Moody’s writing about her life (her narrative) political activism and an act of resistance (through literature)? I can imagine that you had a lot of history knowledge about the Jim Crow south and Civil Rights movements before you came to this class. How has Anne Moody changed the way you understood the history of black people in the south? What was similar about the history of South Africa (Apartheid) and the history of the United States (Jim Crow), and how did these historical similarities influence the ways in which Mark Mathabane and Anne Moody, both gifted student-athletes, embraced their political activism?
