English 101: Definition Essay
Purpose: The ability to clarify what you mean or what you think something means is
critical, both academically and professionally. This essay allows you to engage in the kind
of thinking and writing that will result in an essay in which your audience will be able to
understand what it is you mean, what it is youre thinking about, and why you believe your
definition is valid. Ultimately, your goal would be to have your reader accept or agree with
your definition, but if all you achieve is that they at least understand what you mean and
what underlies your definition, that is good enough. The ability to develop an extended
definition is critical to clear and effective communication and understanding. Furthermore,
your ability to make distinctions and offer reasons for these distinctions is central to your
ability to write effectively in any situation.

A few words about topic selection: as you consider your topic for this essay, keep in mind
that many concepts/ideas and even words have abstract meanings along with the more
concrete dictionary definition. Abstract means that the word or idea is not really tangible or
concreteit is, in fact, an idea that can possess variations of meaning; we all know what it
means, but in reality there exists great differences in what it means. An example of this
might be patriotism.
