Students will submit a process paper comprised of an interview with a credentialed substance abuse counseling professional (e.g., Texas Advanced Addiction Counselor [AAC] or Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor [LCDC]) with at least two years experience concerning addictions and co-occurring disorders. OR interview an individual in recovery regarding their journey. Details regarding this assignment are as follows:
Students are responsible for arranging an interview with an appropriatelycredentialed professional who provides substance abuse counseling services directly to clients. Students are required to demonstrate professionalism in the scheduling andconduct of these interviews. If possible, students are encouraged to request a tour of the facility where the counselor works.
After conducting the interview, students will complete an appropriately APA formatted (refer to APA Manual) 8-10 page (text) process paper utilizing at least 5 peer reviewed resources. Text does not include the cover page, the abstract pages, or the reference page(s).
Contents of the paper must include the following:
Basic information about the counselor interviewed:
Credentials,
Years in field,
Specialized training, and
Work site.
The experiences the counselor has had working with clients with addictions and co-occurring disorders.
The counselors recommendations for working with this population.
What the literature indicates about addictions and co-occurring disorders:
Potential for substance use disorders to mimic and coexist with medical and psychological disorders.
Disease concept and etiology of addiction and co-occurring disorders.
Appropriate counseling strategies when working with clients with addiction and co-occurring disorders.
