Assignment Question
This requires that students read the book, Tangled Up in Blue: Policing the American City, and, in general, write a reflection on the book. In addition to reflecting on the book, this assignment tasks you to answer a few questions which require that you seek research from outside of the book. Your paper must include a minimum of five scholarly/empirical sources and your paper must conform to APA format for citations within the body of your paper and in the reference list. Further, you may not quote any of your sources. Instead, paraphrase (i.e., use your own words) and cite the source. Your final paper should be a minimum of 6 pages of text (12-point font, double-spaced), not counting your reference page, and you do not need to include an abstract.
Here are the general questions, address THEM in your paper: Having read, “Tangled Up in Blue: Policing the American City” tell your thoughts on it using the class material and peer-reviewed (scholarly) sources.
Here are some starting ideas: What points was the author trying to make? Did she make them effectively? Were her points backed up by science? What points did you agree with? Disagree with? What surprised you? What was the “take-away” message(s) of the book? Here are the specific conflict-management questions I would like you to answer after reading the book, your textbook, and your scholarly/empirical sources: How can an individual police officer build better relationships out in the community? (Feel free to incorporate real or hypothetical examples). What factors and conditions are unique to non-white citizens that have an impact on their relationships with the police? What specific techniques are available to assist the police in supporting and building better relationships with non-white citizens, in general? What about other groups of citizens, such as teenagers, the elderly, the LGBTQIA+ community?
