Professor notes: In an essay of between 500-750 words (in the format of your choice i.e. MLA,APA, ete), discuss your understanding of the topic debated in the Munk Debate, “Be it resolved: Don’t Trust the Mainstream Media.° Items you may wish to discuss What did you learn from the debate that caused you to trust the mainstream media more OR less, or was your opinion unchanged?
• What specific points were made by any of the debaters that you felt were exceptionally strong or weak in support of their argument?
• Did the personality or rhetorical skills of any of the debaters enhance or detract from their argument? In what way?
• What issues regarding the media that we covered in class were addressed in the debate? You may also discuss any other issues, opinions or concepts regarding the debate that you think are germane to our class. I don’t want a laundry list of answers to the question posed above. You should write a developed paper that introduces the topic, explains your thesis regarding the topic addresses the points above, and provides a satisfying conclusion. Recent developments in the coverage of the Israel-Hamas confliet illustrate the effect that the media has on international relations, and may be relevant to this essay. My notes: I’m going to attach the debate that needs to written about. It is about an hour long and do not expect you to watch it. There are articles on the internet that summarizes this debate and what they are talking about. This debate is The Munk Debate inToronto with Matt Taibbi and Douglas Murray, Malcom Gladwell, and Michelle Goldberg. It is debating if we should “trust the main stream media” there are a few articles about it online that summarizes the debate. Once we get it going I can send the links to the articles about the debates.
