What roles have Latin American militaries played to support or to erode democracy in Latin American countries and what explains their behavior?

Write an essay in which you craft an argument that addresses ONE of the following prompts. Your essay must be 1000-1200 words in length, double-spaced, in 11 or 12-point font, with 1-inch margins. Be sure to state your argument in a thesis statement and provide support for your thesis/argument (definitions, examples, or short quotes) from the required readings and (where relevant) from class lectures. Avoid citations more than 1 sentence in length, as well as stringing together numerous citations. Use your own words to make the argument, referring to the relevant sources to support your claim(s).

Please number your pages and cite clearly sources and page numbers from the assigned readings on the syllabus (author, date, and page number is sufficient, since we know what all the readings are).

Note that this essay is worth 20% of your final grade (or 200 points). An evaluation rubric will be provided on Canvas.
