What research method is the author using to test the hypothesis (case study, experiment, correlational study, etc.)?

PSY 150 STANDARD ASSIGNMENT:
ANALYSIS & CITATION OF A SCHOLARLY ARTICLE

This assignment is required by all sections of PSY 150 at Name College. It serves as a measure for a General Education Program Learning Outcome in the Social Sciences. This outcome is stated as follows:
Graduates will be able to gather, organize, interpret, and evaluate scientific data and apply it to real world issues.

It also serves as a measure for seven PSY 150 Course Learning Outcomes:
Students will define key research concepts (e.g. hypothesis, independent variable, dependent variable) and accurately identify them in the context of research examples.
Students will recognize the problem of bias in research and identify ways to control it.
Students will identify a variety of research methods, including the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Students will demonstrate basic familiarity with APA style by correctly citing scholarly sources.
Students will read and summarize general ideas and conclusions from psychological sources.
Students will effectively conduct a scholarly literature search.
Students will evaluate psychological research from the standpoint of adherence to the APA Ethics Code involving human research participants.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS: In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to be exposed to scholarly literature within the psychology field. In other words, you will read published psychological research and your teacher will coach you with regard to understanding what you are reading. Through this assignment, you will also have the opportunity to enhance your information literacy (i.e. knowledge about how to obtain and use information). Information literacy is a critical skill in todays culture of information overload.

Part I: Article Analysis
You will learn a variety of research methods and steps that researchers take to control bias within their studies as part of the content in this course. The first part of this assignment is applying what you have learned to a scholarly research article. You will be given the article by your instructor and you will be asked to answer five questions about the article:

What is the authors hypothesis? (including all expected physiological, emotional, and behavioral outcomes)
What research method is the author using to test the hypothesis (case study, experiment, correlational study, etc.)?
What steps has the author taken to control bias (i.e. the influence of confounds) within the study design? (you must list three or examples more for full credit.)
Is this an ethical study with respect to the APA standards for ethical research (e.g. informed consent)? Explain. (you must use correct APA terminology listed in the text and identify any major threats to ethicality.
Imagine that you decide to tell a friend about this study. Summarize it in your own words. (you must include all main conclusions, at least one critical comment, and at least one logical implication for real life)

Part II: Literature Search
The second part of this assignment is related to your ability to choose appropriate sources of information when given a research topic. To complete this part of your assignment, you will locate two scholarly sources that are topically related to the article you analyzed in Part I. These articles should be peer-reviewed research articles. You should choose articles as if you were writing a research paper on the topic and you needed to select two more articles. Once you locate the sources, you will provide an APA-style citation for the sources you have chosen. You will receive instruction regarding how to create an APA-style citation from your instructor and/or you may use the resources provided on your courses Blackboard site. You do not need to summarize these sources. The goal is to simply demonstrate that you can effectively conduct a scholarly literature search and properly cite the sources you found using APA style.

To understand how this assignment is graded, please review the scoring rubrics provided to you below. When your score for the first part of the assignment and the second part of the assignment are added together, the assignment is worth a total of 100 points.
