Uyghurs of Xinjiang Province in western China, a Central Asian province in the arid region of the Taklamakan Desert, face increasing persecution by the ethnic Han Chinese of the central government. Their nationalist aspirations have now led to incarceration of over a million Uyghurs in “reeducation,” or concentration camps. Modern China absorbed Xinjiang in the final days of Mao’s Communist victory in 1949. Prior to that, there had been a couple of short lived East Turkistan Republics. Who are the Uyghurs? What forces, cultural, religious, and linguistic, separate them from Han Chinese? What political and economic forces working within China are moving the Chinese central government to insist on ethnocultural unity? Consider what you have learned about One Belt, One Road when analyzing this issue. Compare Chinese statement on the policy to outside evaluations of the circumstances.
