Personal Reflection Essay Assignment My Culture, Mental Health and Mental IllnessCulture can be defined as “the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group”. For purposes of this assignment culture is being defined broadly in this way but then focused on your family. You can choose to consider your cultural influences at any level from the narrow to the broad. The definition of “family” is up to you.1. Your essay should beginwith a brief descriptive paragraph (or two) on family background – this can include geographic, religious, family size/makeup, country of origin, tribal elements, languages – frankly any elements of your cultural influences that you feel are relevant to considering how you view mental health and mental illness. This intro section gives some perspective on the context in which you learned about the world and developed your views mental health/illness. Some basic description of your family is required – don’t skip this step. 2. Then the remainder of the reflection can focus on just a few cultural influences or experiences you deem important. As this is a brief essay – don’t feel the need to be all encompassing – you can be focused and directed.Just a few examples of events or people or relationships and some description of how these elements influenced your current views of mental illness. Your final paragraph should draw some conclusions. 3. Questions you might address (you do NOT have to address all of these, pick one or two or create your own): •What messages did I hear in my family about mental illness? •What messages did I hear in my family about maintaining mental health? •How does my culture (family characteristics, religion, ethnicity, etc.) influence those messages? •If members of your family have addressed their own mental health/distress issues, how has thisexperience shaped your views of mental health or illness? What is most important is that your writing demonstrates your self-evaluation – some thoughtful consideration as to how “your culture” has influenced/is influencing you in your views of mental health and illness.4. The assignment is worth 20 points.Good – 13-16 points: Follows the format and spirit of the assignment as described above.
