In this journal, you will be choosing a social media platform to use as a case study, to explore how technologies have fundamentally altered our human relationships.

Your Tasks

Choose one social medium (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok, Discord, LinkedIn etc.). In at least 300 words, analyze how this platform has changed the ways that we represent ourselves and look at others. You will also analyze how your chosen platform has altered human relationships by answering the following questions:

What is your relationship with your chosen platform? Do you use it? Why or why not? If so, has this platform had any consequences or effects (positive or negative) on your daily life? (3 points)
Do you see this social media platform as an extension of yourself? (If you don’t use it: do you think that others see it as an extension of themselves?). Explain your answer. (2 points)
Do you think that the use of your chosen platform leads to the subjugation of its users? (2 points)
Do you think that your platform is an example of what McLuhan calls autoamputation? If not, can you think of another platform that is a better example? (2 points)
How does McLuhan’s famous statement, the medium is the message relate to your chosen platform? Be specific. (2 points)
