What is your motivation in becoming a school counselor?

What is your motivation in becoming a school counselor?
o Be a recourse to my community by providing social and emotional support to our students, along with academic and career guidance.
o This is where my heart and passion is

How will your own values, beliefs and biases influence you as a school counselor?
o service to others is important
o Providing support to first generation students (hoping that they can be guided towards college
o My biggest bias might be in helping the Hispanic and Latino community at greater lengths because I do not want them to lack services and guidance not provided to me or people who looked like me while in school.

What areas do you feel you will need ongoing continuing education to remain an effective school counselor?
o Attend training when possible and relevant to our students’ needs/deficiencies
o Summer courses offered through the district to help me stay connected with the staff and teachers at my school site (that connection and being in trainings with them will help foster a greater sense of community) that way when I see them or need to work with them throughout the school year, they know I am part of the team there to support them along with our students.
o Diversity training, drug and substance training (given that trends and drugs are evolving fast).

What fears and/or apprehensions do you have in becoming a school counselor and how do you intend to overcome them?
o My greatest fear is not being able to find a job after graduation because I earned a degree through an online university versus going to a physical and local institution (either California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) schools. I plan on overcoming this hurdle by acquiring additional practicum and fieldwork hours, allowing me to network with multiple school districts and show them I can hold such a position.
