I want the class to consider this together and comment on what other people have found. This is how we will take on challenges in San Antonio. We are “Joining Forces.”

We need patients to be involved the process here so that we can craft strategies that are responsive to them, one practitioner said. . .It wont work unless we have community buy-in. Henry and Adela are an example of thousands of San Antonians who are motivated to improve their health. We are going to look at the resources available. We will look at cooperative efforts that include city departments, non-profits, public schools, community organizations, etc.

In District 3, the number of individuals diagnosed with diabetes is a staggering 67.8%.

Carlos and Adela’s family
Carlos and Adela are both in their early 40s. Carlos was diagnosed with pre-diabetes 3 months ago. Adela also has pre-diabetes and has been taking medication for a year. They are both over weight, but not obese. They have 3 children, a daughter, age 7, and two sons, ages 10 and 12. Their 10 year-old son was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Carlos and Adela and very motivated to improve the health of their entire family. Carlos and Adela both work from 8 5, Monday-Friday. Sometimes Adela will work until 6, but both are usually home by 5:30.
