Students are required
to complete a 5-7-page response paper on a piece of Byzantine art at the Metropolitan
Museum, Cloisters, Fordham Museum (or another relevant museum). Each person
should, during their museum visit, select a piece of Byzantine art that appeals in some
way. Basically, pick something you like or find interesting. This may include but is not
limited to icons, paintings, mosaics, glass, jewelry, textiles, pottery, weapons, tools,
statuary, etc. The student will then write a response paper answering the following
questions:
What is the piece? Who created it (if known)? Where was it created? When was it created?
Put it in its historical context. Then consider: What is the medium (Is it a mosaic, a
sculpture, jewelry, fresco, etc.)? What does it depict? Describe the piece. What does this
piece tell you about Byzantine life, religion (if it is a religious piece), or culture (i.e. what is
its cultural meaning and context)? What is its function? What is your response to this piece
(why did you select this particular object)?
