Movie Analysis Paper
It may be easier to observe interpersonal conflict when we are not emotionally involved. For this paper, you will analyze the nature of a conflict as presented in a movie in light of current scholarship on conflict and communication.

First of all, select a movie from the list below or find your own. Watch the movie and decide what is most interesting about what happens in the conflict between the two characters and that you can talk about based on the course materials. That is, you may find a conflict situation on virtually any topic we have covered in class: interests and goal, power, conflict styles, emotions, negotiation, third-party intervention, forgiveness and reconciliation, or any other concept that is in the textbook if you need help with this, please let me know. Make sure to choose one topic. Do not try to write a paper on five different topics. If you are writing a paper on emotions in conflict, please stick to emotions in conflict.

After deciding which movie to analyze, you will find a minimum of three scholarly articles on the topic of your analysis of the movie. These should be no earlier than 2010 and come from scholarly journals or edited volumes or books. Please do not use other popular magazines or self-help websites/books here to critique your current issue article.
See academic databases such as Communication Abstracts, Communication Studies Multisearch, and PsycInfo for a start on finding good scholarly articles. In familiarizing yourself with scholarly articles, you should realize that most articles you come across will contain the following: a) a review of relevant literature; b) a section detailing the method used for the experiment or analysis; c) a results section detailing the findings of the researchers; and d) a discussion section in which the researchers discuss what their findings mean to the general body of knowledge on the topic. You also may come across a review of relevant literature with no original study or results reported. You can use either or both type(s) of articles to inform your analysis.

Then, address the following issues. This paper should be 6-8 pages long, typed and double-spaced. Please apply course concepts/scholarly articles and cite sources appropriately (in APA format).

Questions/Analysis:
1. Describe conflict components such as identifying the various events and the verbal/nonverbal exchanges that contribute to the escalation of the conflict between the two characters, providing examples of negative/positive emotions, discussing about the characters conflict management styles/competence, and/or exploring the power dynamics between characters.
2. Take an approach to analyze the conflict by incorporating information from scholarly articles. Make sure that you define all the terms and cite references where necessary. You are to apply the approach to your movie wherever you see the concept suits the scenario.
3. Provide general communication advice and/or conflict management advice to the characters in your movie as how to better manage the conflict situation
.4. Discuss the role of forgiveness in the conflict in your movie and talk about what you learn from the movie that could help you manage your interpersonal conflicts in a better way.Topic & Annotated Bibliography (30 pts):To make sure you are on the right track, you will propose a movie and a topic of interest for your Movie Analysis Paper after the midterm exam. You will write a brief description of the topic/issue of interest in your movie analysis.
Also, you will provide a five-source annotated bibliography of scholarly articles you feel might assist you in writing your Movie Analysis Paper. For each scholarly article, you will provide the bibliography information in APA style and a short 3-4 sentence description of the article.

These movies have been selected because they focus on relationships and work well for conflict analysis. You also may choose your own movie for the assignment. (Note: Comedies or Horrors typically do NOT work well for this analysis; they usually treat the relational conflicts too superficially.)
