Giovannis Room

What does the novel Giovannis Room help us to understand about the emergence of the gay rights movement in the 1970s?
In answering this question think about what we learn from the novel about cultural prejudices against gay men, legal and institutional barriers to leading a full life, and the ability of gay men to organize.
The question focuses primarily on gay men since that is the topic of the book, but you may also bring in the experience of lesbians, drawing upon the short reading Lesbian Generations.

The paper is worth 100 points. The grade will be determined as follows:

A clearly stated argument that is supported by the evidence (examples) provided in the paper, and that is present in both the introduction and conclusion = (10 points)

A clear description of the gay rights movement of the 1970s what it was, what it sought to accomplish, what its limitations and successes were = (10 points)

Context (what was happening at the time that might have caused the author to write the novel as he did, for example, to choose his characters or to develop the specific story he did). Discuss two aspects of context relevant to the book = 20 points (10 points each) Remember that the book was written before the gay rights movement of the 1970s

Three examples from the book that provide evidence for your argument. Do not just list your examples, but explain how they prove your argument. Give the page number and quote from the text. = 60 points (20 points each)
You may use parenthetical citations.

If parts of your paper are written in a way that is difficult to understand, you will not get the points for that part of your paper. Remember that in a history paper, you need to explain what you are talking about. Do not just assume that the reader can fill in the blanks it is only when you explain the importance of slavery to the novel, for example, that you can clearly make your points. To make sure that the paper can be clearly understood by others, it is often helpful to have someone else read it, or to read it to yourself out loud. Be sure to proofread!! If you have several typos, misspellings, and/or grammatical errors you will lose five points.
