Now you are from Sierra Leone, west Africa and your professor is asking you to write your own: Reflexivity and Positionality Statement to Assignment 1: and try to answer all the questions in the assignment 1?
Assignment 1: Reflexivity and Positionality Statement: As scholars in the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development, we are dedicated to ending exclusion and advancing human rights. Our work promotes the values of social justice, equity, and equality. But how do we ensure that we are not assuming the role of oppressor and perpetuating injustice? How do we responsively work with the communities we seek to serve as members of these communities ourselves or outside researchers? Shouldnt we also pause and contemplate how our power has shaped our understanding of the world we study? This assignment will explore issues related to reflexivity in our research practice by asking the question How does power come to bear? (Leavy, 2017). By asking this question, we examine our attitudes and behaviors that have been influenced by our place in society. How has our identity and our position in the world shaped our definition of power, marginalization and voice, and how does this affect how we know and what we know? Use this assignment to examine your positionality and power, and how it interplays with our ethical obligations as scholars of a public research institution that is vested in serving the community. We will examine the philosophical dimension of ethics which is based on your values system and addresses the question What do you believe? and the praxis dimension of ethics addresses the question What do you do? and finally brings us back to the question How does my power come to bear?
