What distinguishes abnormal psychology from clinical psychology should be the subject of a research paper. There will be a 3-4 page (double spaced, APA format) “case study” final paper where you choose a fictional character to examine through the lens of abnormal psychology. The character can be from a movie, TV show, book, or something similar. Feel free to contact me if you are unsure if your choice is appropriate for the assignment. I will ask you to touch on the following 5 elements: Theoretical perspective (you can choose up to 2, but I recommend sticking with 1) Assessment methods Symptomology Etiology Treatment options 1) So for your theoretical perspective, I want you to choose a particular lens to view abnormality from. This could be, for instance, “humanistic psychology”, “psychodynamic psychology”, or “neuroscience/biological psychology”. But it doesn’t have to be one of these. You should explain a bit about this perspective and then use it to analyze the character. 2) You’ll also need to tell me how you’re going to assess the character for potential mental illness. Will you use Rorschach tests, neurobiological instruments, or something else? Different approaches to psychology have different methods of assessment, so this is tied to your theoretical perspective. 3) Then you’ll need to explain how the character you’ve chosen is a good fit for a specific diagnosis by explaining what symptoms they have and how that fits with a specific disorder or “life problem”. This can be any “problem” discussed by your textbook, it doesn’t have to be a DSM diagnosis–as, for example, humanistic psychologists and psychoanalysts may not always use the DSM. 4) I also want you to explain a bit about how this person may have developed this disorder or these problems. This may require you to use your creativity and come up with a backstory or life history, if your character’s history isn’t explored in the movie/TV show/whatever you’re choosing the character from. 5) Finally, if you were this person’s therapist/psychologist, what techniques and specific interventions would you use to help them? This should also be tied to your theoretical perspective!
