What cues social perceivers should focus on to detect deception?
There are few ways in modern research to detect if someone is being truthful or not. This is known as cues to social deception. The first way is to observe the tone of the voice during an interview; do they hesitate as they speak or raise the pitch of their voice? These are signs that the interviewee could potentially be lying. So the voice is an important cue to detect deception.
Another way to detect deception is to let the interviewee know to maintain eye contact during the interview, if they are struggling or seem burdened its a good indication that they may be lying this was proven in study done by (Vrij et al.,2010)
Yet another way to detect liars is to create more challenging questions for the interviewee to answer which makes them think harder and struggle to come up with answers therefore making it easier for the interviewer to expose their lies.
Detecting the quantity of words is a great way to catch a liar because they tend to not say nearly as much as truth tellers.
Encouraging interviewee to say more or to be more descriptive about time, location and things heard which if they are lying they typically cannot recall or describe in detail like truth tellers. Watch how they speak; liars tend to speak slower in speech with more grammatical errors.(Law and human behavior,2008)
To throw the interviewee off its a good idea to use unexpected questions to reveal if they are indeed lying or telling the truth.
Here is the question you have to work on based on whats written above:
How this may differ from what they usually pay attention to?
