What are the most important reasons for low public trust in government? How could public trust in government be increased?

Public trust in government has been declining significantly. And the most important reason for it is that Americans think they can do little to affect the government’s actions. Another reason for the low public trust is no to little confidence or support of political decisions. When citizens don’t trust the government, people’s political involvement declines too. In this situation, we may see a decrease in taxes revenue and the inability of the government to support widely approved activities like Medicare or solve many country’s problems. Long-term distrust may lead to the inability of the government to defend the national interest, negatively affect the economy.

Public trust in government can be increased by improving the accountability and transparency of the government. Lockdown of the power grid in the winter could be one of the examples when some people were waiting for a transparent investigation, actions from the government, which would reduce the chances of this situation happening again, or for an answer to the question “Who is responsible?” Some citizens think that the trust in government can be turned over by better political leadership and the greater honesty of those already in politics. Political reforms, term limits, reduction of the role of money in politics would help with it.

As the authors note, Americans have been anxious about the impact of immigrants on American society for a long time. Yet, despite waves of immigrants and increasing diversity in the United States, our core political culture—our respect for liberty, equality, and democracy—remains strong. Why is this the case?

Our country has long been a place in which immigrants seek opportunity. In recent years, immigration has been exploited as a negative practice for our country simply blanketing legal immigration and illegal immigration with the same brush. Some will argue immigrants bring with them their own beliefs and standards that may appear to conflict with the principles of our country, while others see immigrants as people seeking the opportunities for prosperity and equality that may not exist where they originated from. Regardless of where immigrants originate from, the majority are coming to the United States because of the liberty, equality and democracy that we offer. This is why it has remained strong, the majority of people immigrating to our country are striving to be a part of those systems. In the last election, history was made in several political bodies across the country including a more diverse congress that better reflects the constituencies they serve. From its inception, our country has been a nation of immigrants seeking liberty and equality through democracy and it will continue to be. We must continue to allows those who immigrate to this country to contribute to our systems and thought processes to ensure our respect for liberty, equalitcixy, and democracy remain strong.
