Order and progress are hallmark imperatives for what has come to be known as liberal modernity. The idea is that as time passes, societies progress. So called third worlds develop into first worlds. This metanarrative has governed knowledge production in but also beyond the academy, especially in the field of development studies: where the language of first, second, and third worlds has recently been replaced by ” developed” and “developing”. What are the legacies of this order and progress? And how have these imperatives organized our understanding of the world?
