Take a close look at Saras encounter with the beggar girl in front of the bakery in Chapter 13, One of the Populace. Looking back at the earlier chapters in the novel, identify several key moments from Chapters 1-12 that are connected in some significant way to this pivotal scene. Some of the things you might consider are: 1) Saras internal dialogue and how that voice inside of her guides her actions; 2) Saras devotion to the idea of behaving as a princess, even when she is in bad circumstances, and what that means; 3) how the beggar responds to Sara, why that response is significant, and how it might be connected to Saras relationship with Becky; and 4) the short-term and long-term consequences of Saras kindness. What does this scene tell us about Victorian ideas about charity?
