As exemplified by the readings, and by the life of an artist such as Artemisia Gentileschi, the Italian Renaissance was very much a boy’s club. In fact, a frequent, longstanding issue in art history is the fact that the field and its institutions (including galleries, art academies, and museums) have historically favored male artists while neglecting the contributions of women artists.
Watch the following video about “Why are there so few female artists?” by the Scottish National Galleries and consider the following question: Why were women artists so scarce during the Renaissance? Do you think that women artists are better equipped to address certain subject matter than men? If yes, what would this subject matter be? Base your opinion on the readings and lecture from this week. Write between 200-250 words.
