Glenn Altschuler and Stuart Blumin in their book The GI Bill: A New Deal for Veterans wrote about the legislative construction and subsequent impact of the GI Bill. They describe the primarily remembered aspects of the legislation, the educational and mortgage assistance, as well as less-well remembered aspects of the law. They strive to both understand the legend of the bill as a major transformative element in the second half of twentieth century America while also stripping away “…the stories and the praise..” in order to “…gain a more dispassionate understanding of the bill’s role in the shaping of postwar American.” (4)

For this paper, you will be using the book as evidence to support your answer to the following question: Was the GI Bill a success or a failure? A good paper will provide an answer that explains how the bill was either a success or a failure. Additionally, a solid essay will consider how the other option is not an apt description of the bill. If you decide that the best answer is both a success and a failure, explaining how both can be true and not true at the same time will be necessary in a good paper. Finally, the paper should end with a short paragraph where you answer the question: if you were in a position to use the GI Bill, would you use it and why? The best papers will avoid lapsing into informal writing with this final paragraph.
