The City Essay – Assignment
Basic prompt: Compose an essay that describes the art scene in a specific city. Focus
on the current art scene there. This essay will assess the key elements and structures of
the scene and how these respond to their specific context. The goal will be to use this
insight to articulate the character of the art scene in that place. Please use the City Essay
Worksheet to help generate relevant questions.
Your City Essay can take a broad view of the art scene in the city or it can focus on a
specific art scene within the city. If you focus on a specific scene, please be sure to
communicate about it with your instructor to ensure it meets the requirements of the
assignment.
Word Count: 1500 words minimum (not counting the works cited page). It is okay to go
over the minimum word count, but essays that dont meet the minimum will be marked
down. The word count minimum does not include the words in your works cited page.
Research Requirements: See the Bibliography assignment. The bibliography you develop
will function as the research foundation for your City Essay. The bibliography will compile
all of the relevant sources that informed your understanding. In addition to this, you will
have a works cited page at the end of this essay. The works cited page will only list the
sources that you cited in the paper. You dont need to cite all the sources in your
bibliography in your paper. Do you understand the way I am differentiating between the

Formatting: Please use the following conventions
– MLA style
– introduction, body and conclusion organized around a thesis statement
– works-cited page is required
– 1-inch margins on top, bottom, and sides
– 12-point standard font
– double-spaced
