to what extent do socioeconomic factors (family’s income, education level, occupation, race, gender, age, etc) affect academic performance?

For the research essay, each student will choose one topic, (topic copied below).

Topic: to what extent do socioeconomic factors (family’s income, education level, occupation, race, gender, age, etc) affect academic performance? How do these relate to the ideas about academic performance that you have already been studying in this class–growth and belonging mindsets, regular strenuous activity, and grit (passion and perseverance)? You will want to narrow this topic to one or two socioeconomic factors that you think would be fruitful to research? If your research suggests that certain factors hinder a student’s ability to succeed, you MUST also discuss ways to mitigate these potentially negative outcomes. In other words, you MUST present potential reasonable solutions

The essay itself must answer the question in the prompt and thoroughly treat the topic to the extent that the word limit allows. It will develop a logical argument supported by research. It needs to be organized into paragraphs that begin with topic sentences that support the thesis/claim/ forecast sentence that was introduced in the introduction. Each paragraph will need to include evidence from the sources cited in the form of quotations, summaries, or paraphrases. Quotations must be introduced with signal or attributive phrases. The essay needs to draw some reasonable conclusions and may also recommend solutions and areas in which further research may be needed.

The research paper will be a minimum of 875-1000 words with 5-8 substantial scholarly sources (Peer-reviewed journal article, book from reputable publisher, essay in a book from a reputable publisher). Four of these sources will be the four that we have already read from Angela Duckworth, Julia Leonard et al. Aneeta Rattan et al., and Sattelmair and Ratey. Sources (4) are uploaded as pdf files. Other sources need to be located using the link provided below.

It will follow MLA format in layout and citing sources.

The essay will be graded on the following criteria:

The extent that it sets forth a logical argument organized into coherent paragraphs with topic sentences and evidence

The extent to which it represents its sources accurately
