“The Yellow House”.

(1) “On a detailed city map once given to me by Avis Rent a Car, the French Quarter has been shaded in light turquoise, magnified in a box at the bottom of the page. New Orleans East is cut off, a point beyond, a blank space on someone’s mental map.” Based on this quote why are maps important? What do you think a mental map is? For this question think about race, class, and representation.

(2) New Orleans is often described as the most unique city in the United States. Describe what you imagine New Orleans to be like if you haven’t visited, if you have visited describe how it was different or the same as what you imagined before going. Be descriptive in your writing.

(3) In your own words, explain Sarah Broom’s style of writing. I suggest that she is deeply concerned with providing the reader with a “sense of place” and I define “sense of place” as a center of meaning and field of care a location to which people become attached and from which they establish a geographical identity, find examples from the book to support my assertion. In other words, how does Broom provide the reader with a sense of place? What do you think sense of belonging means? How sense of place and sense of belonging connected?

(4) Research the ethnic group known as Louisiana Creole, tell us about their history, language, food, religion and what makes them unique. What does Sarah Broom say about creole identity?

(5) Provide 3 examples from the text of moments when racism and classicism are materialized in the city. In other words, how does a place reflect and support racist and classist practices?
