The Social Issue: American Education System

For this assignment students must engage in the research process using informal qualitative methods*

Examples of informal qualitative methods include conducting interviews, holding a focus group, field observations of a specific professional setting or event. Your goal is to gather information from people regarding your topic and report what you’ve discovered in your conversation or observations of them.

Data collection guidelines:

Survey or One-on-one interviews: at least five people

Focus Groups: Five or more

Observation of professional setting or event: Minimum one hour

It is also important that you communicate that you are doing this as apart of a sociological class project and that their actual names will not be used in your assignment.

Create a power point, at least 6 slides. Save your power point as a PDF and upload.

Outline for how to present information:
1. Determine your interest area

2. Identify 1-2 questions you might want to use to help gather information from the field.

3. Decide whether to conduct a poll, interview subject matter experts, meet with a group of folks.

4. Take notes and/or collect data. (if its a survey, collect results)

5. Review notes and decide if your questions were answered, if they lead to more questions, etc. You must include the questions you asked your subjects in your final assignment. Points will be deducted if those questions are not included with your paper.

6. Apply a sociological lens to your findings and provide a clear summary. – THIS IS YOUR ONLY REQUIRED REFERENCE
Questions you must also answer:
What was the challenge about collecting data in the field?
What surprised you?
What would you like to learn more about if you had the time?
How did people react to your research topic/questions?
