Your paper should be a critical reflection on (some part of) one of the readings, in which you identify a thesis, consider and respond to objections, and say which side has the stronger case and why. To do the job your paper should probably be 4 or 5 pages long but no more than 1500 words. If you go over the limit and you what you write is of interest Ill read on; but I reserve the right to stop reading if I get boredand I am easily bored. For guidance on writing a philosophy paper see Jim Priors piece On Writing Philosophy at the class website Links tabwhich includes other links to useful resources. Your paper should be a clear, coherent, organized essay. Do not, absolutely do not, start with a hook. I realize that in some classes people want you to do this, but its unprofessional and not the way we do it in philosophy. Just get down to business.
A philosophy paper is not a research paper. Dont feel that you have to pull in lots of sources. If something is relevant, from the readings or elsewhere, use it and cite it (Im not fussy about the format of footnotesjust that if you use a source you cite it).
