PURPOSE: The goal of this assignment is to dig deeper into the historical debates on this question: Did Abraham Lincoln Free the Slaves?”

REQUIREMENTS: write a short analysis of 2-3 pages that answers these questions in order, using the assigned secondary source readings by Allen Guelzo and Vincent Harding (on pp. 87-104 of the coursepack PDF). You do not need to do any additional independent research. The prompts are:

Briefly explain the argument and key points of the Yes position, i.e., the historian arguing that Lincoln should receive the most credit.
Briefly explain the argument and key points of the No position, i.e., the historian arguing that Lincoln should not receive the most credit.
Which historians argument and evidence is most convincing? Why? Be specific in your answer.

Your response should consist of at least 2-3 pages, not counting the Works Cited page, double spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Review the comments/rubric on your first assignment so you know what to focus on for this worksheet. The use of quotations is acceptable, but when possible, put the concepts into your own words. Cite using the MLA (parenthetical citation) style, which includes a Works Cited page (or if you are familiar with the Chicago/Turabian style, use that instead, but no APA worksheets will be accepted). Quotation, paraphrase, and summary must all be cited. As a general rule, every paragraph should have at least one citation (if not more). I take plagiarism very seriously; the essay must be entirely your own, original production.
