In The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham, the protagonist Charles Strickland resigned his stable work, left a happy content family, gave up the superior life. But tossed and turned, even not having enough to eat,all for his dedication to the pursuit of the ideal of painting. The course of Strickland’s self-pursuit and self-realization is not satisfying. The reality of survival will make him experienced the secular cold reception and ridicule, the emotional temptations and hardship in maintaining survival. All these contribute to Strickland’s personality, persistence and ultimate ego.
The essay is divided to three chapters. The first part described the influence of family environment on Strickland and his life situation. The second part is focused on the discussion of his rise from the “self” subject to reality to the “self” pursuing inner perfection after getting rid of the shackles of the world. The third part described Strickland’s realization of inner perfection and pursuit of artistic beauty. This essay discloses that only if we get rid of fetters and adhere to our dream when we pursue the peace of mind, can we actualize ourselves.
