The Automatic Sweetheart
Imagine being in love with a sweetheart. One day you discover a truth
about your sweetheart. Your sweetheart looks, feels and acts human, yet the sweetheart is not a conscious human being but a technologically advanced, artificially
intelligent machine programmed to respond to your behavioral expressions of love.
Task
1. Explain how you know the people in your life are conscious humans and not machines.
2. Describe a psychological test that can detect consciousness in another being. Be sure and cite the test in your paper and on your Reference page.
3. Do you believe psychology should adopt a humanistic or a mechanistic model? Provide some explanation for your position.
4. Now that you know the truth about your sweetheart, could you
still love him or her? Why or why not?
Logistics
The length of your paper should be 5 full pages. Your reference page will be page 6. DO NOT create a typical title page. Instead, put your name in the upper left-hand corner. Then, double space and center your title. You do not need an abstract page. All pages will be double-spaced with 1 margins all around (typical APA format). You must include a reference page(s) that lists all sources. Conventional rules of APA apply (except the title page and abstract). You will not need to include headings (e.g., Method, Results, etc.).
