Read Chapters 1 and 2 of NCTMs Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM). Then read through the Common Cores Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice. Together
these documents articulate a vision for mathematics instruction in our country. Write your reaction to this vision.
Your reaction paper will consist of the following three parts:
1. Summarize the big ideas that are evident to you regarding NCTM’s six principles and the Common Core’s Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice.
2. How is the vision put forward in these documents different from/similar to the schooling you received?
3. New York State Common Core Standards have been developed with NCTM/Common Core as a guide. What do these standards mean for you as a future teacher? What are your concerns as you prepare to teach according to these standards? In what areas do you see yourself needing work? In what areas do you feel strong? Is there information given that you do not understand? If so, what?
